According to the report, Bangladesh exported clothing products to South Africa in the fiscal year 2009 to 2010, amounting to about 43 million dollars and accounted for 4% of the South African market.

The main importing countries in South Africa are the mainland, accounting for 70% of the market, 5.5% of the market and 4.7% of the India market.

Mr Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, vice president of Bangladesh garment manufacturers and Exporters Association, said Bangladesh garment exporters were unable to compete with other countries with tax cuts because they had to pay 40% tariffs, 51% import duties and 14% value-added tax to the South African government.

There are several businessmen in South Africa coming to Bangladesh for procurement. However, if the Bangladesh government fails to attach importance to the market and gives proper support, this trend will not be maintained.

Bangladesh garment exporters have called on the government to take actions to organize Bangladesh clothing exhibition, promote products and increase Bangladesh's diplomatic resources in South Africa, so as to help promote the sale of Bangladesh clothing exports in South Africa.
