American Yarn Making Enterprises Set Up Factories In China

Invista, the US fiber manufacturer, has started building factories in China, specializing in the production of nylon yarn for automotive safety airbags.

The production plant built in China has brought Invista closer to the Asian growth market.

The new Invista professional fiber (Shanghai) factory is located in Qingpu District, Shanghai, and is the first 6,6 production plant built by Invista in Asia.

Consumers will no longer have to wait for the yarn to be shipped to China from Invista's factories in Kingstown and Ontario.

The price of this yarn will be cheaper due to lower freight rates.

Nvista's project manager, Phil Webster, is responsible for the construction of overseas factories. He has played the same role in the construction of two other safety air bag factories in Invista, which are located in the UK and Jamaica respectively.

The competition in the safety air bag yarn market is fierce.

Last year, Polyamide High Performance GmbH, a partner of Germany, and a partner of China joint venture, China Shenma Group began to build factories in China.

Japanese fiber manufacturer Toray Industrial Company and Korean fiber manufacturer Hyosung industry also enter the market.

Vendors sell such yarns to security system manufacturers, such as TRW, Autoliv, Takata and Hyundai Mobis.

A typical car in North America uses 4.4 pounds of safety air bag yarn.

Invista imported polymer resin is used to produce this yarn.

But the import mode may change, so Asian customers will benefit further.

Stone said the company plans to produce polymer resins in China in the next few years.

Although car sales have slowed down, Thomas Xu of TRW systems consulting (Shanghai) said that the TRW safety airbag business in 2009 was expected to grow by 50%, as more car manufacturers in China began to use side window safety airbags.

  夺回业务

In order to maintain its market share, Invista must take back its business from its competitors.

It includes new businesses in Detroit and business in Japanese and Korean automakers.

At the initial stage of construction, Shanghai Qingpu plant will export 70% of its products, mainly for Kolon, a Korean air bag manufacturer.

Nylon 6,6 is also produced with tyres.

Webster said that the supply of tire fibers will be a potential opportunity.
