Bayer Spent 30 Million Euros To Improve Polyurethane Dispersion Capacity

In order to meet the expanding demand, Bayer Material Technology coatings, adhesives and special chemicals division (CAS) has invested 30 million euros to expand its waterborne polyurethane dispersion device.

"We hope to achieve sustainable development through innovative, feasible and environmentally friendly technologies, and we need to build factories in the major regions of the world to form an efficient global network," JoachimWolff, a CAS Department Manager, said in a statement issued in May 2nd.

At present, the CAS Department has polyurethane dispersion device in Germany Dormagen and Texas.

The new 20 thousand ton polyurethane dispersion production facility will be put into operation in the second quarter of the Shanghai Caojing integrated base. The products will be supplied to all major industrial bases in the world and have an important strategic position.

Bayer will also have the intention of building acrylic dispersion (PAC) in ElPrat, Spain, and will increase production capacity to meet the strong demand for single component and bi component applications.

The CAS department also produces polyester dispersions and PU/PAC mixed dispersions, which can produce water-borne single component and two-component coatings and adhesives together with isocyanates and polyisocyanates.

Influenced by the European restrictions on VOC emission regulations, coatings and adhesives present a trend towards low solvent and solvent free, and the awareness of environmental protection, human health and sustainable development in Asia is also growing.

Waterborne polyurethane dispersions contain very low or no volatile organic compounds (VOC), and provide a variety of options for prescription designers to reduce and eliminate solvent formulations.

At the same time, the formula based on polyurethane dispersion technology also meets the increasingly stringent environmental regulations in many countries and regions.

Bayer said that the pformation to polyurethane dispersion technology will not affect the technical performance of the traditional formula. Polyurethane dispersion can meet the vast majority of technical requirements of the traditional formula. At present, waterborne polyurethane coatings are growing at an annual rate of 5% higher than the average level of the business.

Polyurethane resin was developed by Bayer Group 50 years ago.

Through the formulation and process adjustment, the performance of waterborne polyurethane coatings is now even more than the traditional solvent based coatings, especially in the application fields of plastic coatings and wood coatings. Through the combination of UV curing technology, the superior performance of the waterborne polyurethane coatings has been shown to be more productive. The performance and environmental characteristics of the waterborne polyurethane coatings have been obtained. The waterborne dual component polyurethane coatings have been widely used in many fields, such as automobiles, machinery, furniture, floor and plastics worldwide.
