Survey Of Clothing And Shoes Market In Britain

2008/4/11 14:12:00 21

Overview Of The British Clothing And Footwear Market.

In 2007, the British clothing and footwear market was about 48 billion 550 million pounds, of which 42 billion 450 million were garments and 6 billion 100 million were shoes.

The sum of the two accounts for only 6% of the total consumer spending, a record low.

Just as food, heating and other basic necessities, the relative importance of clothing and shoes in family budgets is declining.

The main reason for the decline is that the prices of these products are declining.

Now the cost of most clothing and footwear products is lower than that of the century, not only in relative sales revenue but also in absolute terms, such as current prices.

In some varieties, such as women's coats, prices have fallen for a long time. Although women's clothing consumption is often larger than that of men's clothing, it has remained depressed in general.

The trend of casual clothing consumption has a greater impact on men than women. Nowadays, women's wardrobe is bigger, which contains their work clothes, casual wear, informal clothes, sportswear and outdoor clothing.

The sharp drop in prices is due to the fact that Britain has been importing clothing and shoes from countries with low labour costs.

More than 90% of the garments are imported.

China and Hongkong are major importing countries, but British imports also come from some other countries, including Italy, Turkey, Vietnam and Bangladesh. Manufacturing in Britain has shrunk dramatically, though luxury goods and designer products have always been profitable industries.

Fierce competition on the high street is also the cause of price declines. Many industries are competing for pounds in clothing stores, department stores (such as Debenhams), chain stores, such as Marks & Spencer and Primark, supermarkets (such as ASDA and Tesco), sports chains, such as JJB, which are competing with exclusive stores (mainly Next and Arcadia) (including multi stores and independent stores).

Although discount stores are very discounted, the two level differentiation between cheap and luxury goods has become a growing feature on the market.

The number of consumers unwilling to buy bargaining products will increase.

Luxury brand consumption in Europe and the United States has set a record with the temptation of advertisements to consumers. Cheap clothing is increasingly troubled by ethical issues (labor conditions and environment).

However, there is no sign of significant growth in market value, so consumer spending on clothing and shoes may continue to decline in the next five years.
